  • International Symposium on Dust-Vegetation Interaction
Sat. 27 Feb. 13:00-17:00, Arid Land Research Center, Tottori University, Tottori, Japan
Purpose : The symposium aims at bringing leading researchers over the world to identify issues in understanding aeolian processes over vegetated land surface and to launch initiatives towards developing a biogeophysical model which can simulate the dust emission and ecosystem processes. Aeolian dust is frequently produced in arid regions of Asia and it increasingly affects human health and local ecosystems not only in the source regions but also in downwind regions. Dust emission processes have been investigated mostly on bare land, and there is very little information about vegetated land. The steppe region neighboring deserts reveals dramatic temporal and spatial changes in land-surface conditions not only due to climatic conditions but also due to desertification through over-grazing and over-cultivation. All these changes are most likely to result in a crucial change in dust emission. Thus, focus here is placed on the steppe as a dramatically changing dust source.
Chairman : Prof. Masato Shinoda (ALRC, Japan)
Invited Speakers : Prof. Yaping Shao (University of Cologne, Germany), Prof. John A. Gillies(DRI, USA), Dr. Masao Mikami (MRI, Japan), Prof. Dong Zhibao (CAREERI, China) etc.
